Florence, 19th November 2021. The final project to build the Bellavista Pavilion was approved, providing the Fortezza da Basso with a new congress room offering over 2,500 seats, along with an exhibition hall, a system of external pathways, hanging gardens, terraces, and green covers to maximise functionality and monumental renovation.

The new Pavilion will be built within the area located between the Opificio delle Pietre Dure (literally, the Workshop of Semi-Precious Stones), the former Machiavelli High School and the Arsenale Pavilion. This area is currently occupied by the former Florence Court warehouse and by the temporary Rastriglia Pavilion, which are going to be demolished.

This project includes the construction of a ground floor entirely devoted to congress and exhibition activities, a basement mostly reserved for catering, storage, and sanitary facilities, and a first floor reserved for installations, facilities and to access the outer cover consisting of gardens, terraces, and external pathways.

“Thanks to a joint work, we managed to unlock a fundamental work to reach a great shared goal for the benefit of the city”, said Florence Mayor Dario Nardella.

“The approval of the final project for the Bellavista Pavilion, featuring architectural solutions created to optimise its management and maintenance – stated Firenze Fiera’s President Lorenzo Becattini – represents an important step to enhance the offer of our congress and exhibition center, as well as a key advantage for the city of Florence to present future bids for great international congresses”.

Florence, 28th October 2021. The opening weeks of JEFF KOONSSHINE exhibition are already sold out. Open until 30th January 2022, the exhibition takes place inside the austere rooms and the monumental courtyard of Palazzo Strozzi, showcasing the most iconic works by the most paid, loved, and controversial living artist in over 40 years of career.

While institutions are developing a strong debate on the birth of a new Renaissance, once again Florence turns out to be an increasingly attractive and magnetic city in terms of contemporaneity, able to attract a younger, more aware and passionate audience; a city – as stated by Arturo Galansino, Director of Palazzo Strozzi and curator of the exhibition along with Joachim Pissarro  – “which is able to take part actively into the artistic avant-garde of our time”. Developed through an intimate dialogue with the artist, this exhibition benefits from major loans coming from the most important collections and international museums and questions the concept of SHINE intended as a concrete, tangible, and metaphysical shine, as an ambiguous game between splendour and glow, and between being and appearing.

The exhibition boasts several cultural references, and hints of past artists who inspired Koons, such as Masaccio, Leonardo, Michelangelo, Bernini, Poussin, Manet, but also Duchamp, Dalí, Andy Warhol, about whom he noted: “We are very different from each other, we have different personalities, but we have both worked on the idea that everything is beautiful for what it is. And on dismantling prejudices – this is probably what we really have in common”.

On show, some of his most famous sculptures in shiny metal, which ironically replicate luxury objects, such as the Baccarat Crystal Set (1986) or the iconic inflatable toys such as the Rabbit (1986) and Balloon Dog (Red) (1994-2000),or reinterpret characters from pop culture such as Hulk (Tubas) (2004-2008). Characterised by reflective properties, the works by Koons – born in York, Pennsylvania, in 1955 – aim at increasing our metaphysical perception of time and space, of surface and depth, materiality and immateriality.

The exhibition is promoted and organised by Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi. Supporters: Municipality of Florence, Region of Tuscany, Chamber of Commerce of Florence, Fondazione CR Firenze, Committee of Palazzo Strozzi’s Partners. Media Partners: Intesa Sanpaolo.

Florence, 22nd October 2021.   450 exhibitors, including artists and designers, from around the world will crowd the Fortezza da Basso until Sunday, 31st October 2021, showcasing their most representative works and productions at the 13th FLORENCE BIENNALE.

The main theme of this edition is “Eternal Feminine – Eternal Change. Concepts of Femininity in Contemporary Art and Design”, exploring the multi-faceted universe of femininity, and moving in two precise directions. One is the idea of femininity as a reflection of divinity, spiritual love, source of purification and elevation; the other is celebrating the fluid and perpetual change characterising contemporaneity and also involving femininity, undergoing constant transformation thanks to the encouragement of social and cultural movements – from the sexual revolution of the 1960s to battles for equal opportunities, up to the current debate on gender identity.

The prize-winners of this edition will be Michelangelo Pistoletto, representing the so-called Arte Povera, photographer Oliviero Toscani, and famous fashion designer and activist Vivienne Westwood.

Florence, 13th October 2021. Earth Technology Expo started at the Fortezza da Basso this afternoon. Open until Saturday, 16th October, it is the most exhaustive exhibition showcasing Italy’s extraordinary ability to create, innovate and find solutions for the great climate challenge, to start an ecological and digital transition and to find protection from environmental disasters. The fair sees the presence of 100 exhibitors, and offers 50 workshops, meetings, presentations, and many solutions, featuring scientists, civil protection experts, research centres, universities, companies, ministers and local and national administrators.

On show, the achievements of a country – Italy – proudly able to produce – the Civil Protection’s earthquake simulator, the new high-tech helmets of the firefighters, new technologies used by rescue workers, “Made in Italy” water used by astronauts, which will go to Mars, the first zero-emission electric ship produced in Italy, and the ‘smart’ pylons anticipating landslides and fires.

“By organising this Expo, Italy proves to be ready for an ecological transition, thanks to its technological excellences and to all the ways you can use them – from daily life to preserving the life of citizens as in the case of Civil Protection – said Fabrizio Curcio, Head of the Civil Protection Department, during the opening ceremony of Earth Technology Expo. –  Events as these are the best opportunities to regain the ability to give the correct value to certain things. Furthermore, we must acknowledge just how much our country can be a source of excellence in many areas, thanks to technology supporting them. For instance, the Civil Protection sees climate changes as a problem requiring a great deal of preparation, but also the ability to give an operational response.

“In terms of prevention, soil protection, or hydrogeological stability, technology plays a key role – explained Eugenio Giani, President of the Region Tuscany –. In the aspects of prevention, technology can revolutionise everything, such as robotic surgery. That is why it is important to invest in innovation and technology – to provide citizens with the same services but with much more efficiency”.

“These days, organising a fair represents an act of courage – explained Lorenzo Becattini, President of Firenze Fiera –; that is why, I would like to thank the organisers, who decided to choose the Fortezza da Basso in Florence to host an event dealing with highly topical themes such as the environmental and digital transition, and discussing them at a high level with the main industry experts.”

The new edition features a ‘rebranding’ operation featuring a strong visual impact, inspired by the patchwork technique, obtained by collecting scraps of classical fabrics in vibrant and bright shades within the same visual, and by inserting the ‘Florence lily’ as a paradigm of the city of Florence.

Inside the over 11,000 square metres of Spadolini Pavilion’s lower floor, visitors will be able to admire the new collections of household linen, the latest proposals for upholstery, curtains, home, spa, marine, contract & hotel textiles, textile publishing and fragrances. The exhibition section will be completed by a full programme of side events, including seminars and workshops, featuring figures of international prestige coming from the living and interior décor world.

A press conference was held this morning inside the Auditorium Di Cicco at the Civil Protection Department in Rome to present ETE – the Earth Technology Expo (http://www.etexpo.it), the most complete exhibition showcasing Italy’s extraordinary ability to create, innovate and find solutions for the great climate challenge, to start an ecological and digital transition and to find protection from environmental disasters. The exhibition will take place from 13th to 16th October 2021 at the Fortezza da Basso (free admission). This event will bring 100 exhibitors and 50 workshops inside the Fortezza, but it will also feature a rich programme of meetings, presentations, and solutions, with the help of scientists, civil protection experts, research centres, universities, companies, ministers, and local and national administrators.

The presentation also saw the participation of Lorenzo Becattini, Firenze Fiera’s President, as a speaker.

Many answers will emerge from the over 5,000 square metres of the Fortezza da Basso, which will host the first exhibition of a whole range of high-tech products and solutions with systems and models already designed and applied, which make Italy a world leader in this sector. It will also be possible to attend surprising presentations based on research and inventions, discover smart solutions going from the production and management of clean energy to the management of local public services, to end with the quality of cities and smart cities. Special attention will also be given to the potential of the 5G and 6G ultra-widebands.

Florence, 1st October 2021. The 26th CONGRESS OF FADOI (the Federation of the Associations of Internist Hospital Managers) will take place at Palazzo dei Congressi from Saturday, 2nd to Monday, 4th October 2021. This scientific society gathers the Italian internist hospital managers, who have been on the front line to assist Covid-19 patients for over one year.

On the first day (Saturday, 2nd October), the opening ceremony will feature a video keynote address by Anthony Fauci, medical expert of the White House, who received the Fadoi Internal Medicine Research Award 2021 at the Italian Embassy in Washington two weeks ago. During the event, His Eminence Cardinal Giuseppe Betori, Archbishop of Florence, and Dario Nardella, Mayor of Florence, will bring their special greetings. The event will also feature a video message from Italian Ministry of Health Roberto Speranza.

It is a return, since the Congress of FADOI, one of the most important scientific societies in our country, had already been held inside the Florence congress and exhibition center in 2019. At that time, there was not any health emergency, and the congress brought over 2,000 representatives to the city.  This time, participants will be 450 – a necessarily lower number to respect anti-contagion safety protocols – coming from all over Italy.

This congress represents an important sign of restart and recovery for the congress sector, going “live” again, and for Florence, which managed to win over other cities’ bids thanks to a series of organisational advantages. First and foremost, because in just 48 hours Florence was able to provide an attractive and convincing proposal both for its congress spaces, inside Villa Vittoria, and for hotel accommodation, thanks to an excellent teamwork carried out by Firenze Fiera, Firenze Convention Bureau, the Agency Planning Congressi in Bologna, and the hoteliers.

Florence, 30th September 2021. Tomorrow (October 1st, 2021), at 17:30, a presentation of the book DANTE SCOPRE l’EUROPA. La geografia europea nella Divina Commedia (DANTE DISCOVERS EUROPE. European Geography in the Divine Comedy) will take place inside the Sala dei Gigli at Palazzo Vecchio by invitation. This work received the high patronage of the European Parliament and represents Firenze Fiera’s tribute to celebrate the 700th anniversary of Dante Alighieri’s death.

For the presentation, Lorenzo Becattini invited Florence Mayor Dario NardellaEugenio Giani, President of the Region of Tuscany, Paola Allegretti, a renowned Dante expert and the scientific coordinator of this book, and Marie-France Merger and Rodney Lokaj, translators of the book.

The book relies on an elegant editorial format, featuring precious colour illustrations of texts ad illuminated manuscripts and a foreword by David Sassoli, President of the European Parliament.

This editorial project was ideated by Lorenzo Becattini and coordinated by Paola Laurella and was also created thanks to the support of Quarkomp Srl and to a precious collaboration with important cultural institutions such as the Vatican Library, the National Central Library in Florence, the British Library in London, the Palatina Library in Parma, and the Municipal Historical Archives and Trivulziana Library in Milan.

“DANTE SCOPRE L’EUROPA is a book that still had not been written within the immense Dante’s bibliography, says Paola Allegretti, adding: “It is an illustrated collection, commented in three languages – Italian, French and English – of all those Divine Comedy’s verses in which Dante talks about places of the European geography. The journey of the reader goes from paradise to hell, as Dante’s gaze on Europe changes according to his purification”.

“This book – said President Becattini – is the first step towards a new strategic vision of society, seeing culture as a key driver for the local economy”.
