OVERVIEW:

The Monumental Area includes the most ancient halls inside the Fortezza da Basso, and represents some of the most remarkable models of Renaissance architecture. The halls called Sala d’Armi and Sala Ottagonale are particularly fascinating, the latter featuring a herringbone brick patterned vault, with no reinforcement – a technique previously used in the 15th century by Brunelleschi to cover his world-renowned Dome for the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore.
